Position Summary:
The Associate Director of Development & Communications collaborates closely with the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement, the Executive Director of the Foundation, and the Director of Institutional Advancement. This position has primary leadership responsibility for major department functions, particularly in fundraising and communications. The Associate Director of Development & Communications is expected to have substantial relationships with community members, donors, administrators, faculty and staff.
Example of Job Duties:
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and/or the Executive Director of the MCC Foundation, the Associate Director of Development & Communications is accountable for contributing to the objectives of the Division of Institutional Advancement through effective performance in these essential duties:
- Annual Giving
Provide leadership for creation and execution of a comprehensive strategic annual giving and communications plans, including providing recommendations to the Foundation board and its committees. Leads the design, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the college’s 12-month annual giving program. This program is the foundation of the fundraising program and the pipeline for future major gifts. Provides ongoing evaluation, analysis, and improvement to achieve required outcomes. - Communications Plan
Responsible for the design, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of a comprehensive communications program for alumni relations and fundraising. Responsible for strategic messaging and targeted communications to segmented constituencies within the college/foundation’s 25,000 constituents. This work requires oversight of database integrations with various technological platforms to distribute messages and maintain the accuracy of data. - Data Management
Oversee the continued development of databases to ensure that software tools are integrated, and that data are accurate. Propose and implement policies and procedures for data management to ensure integrity of databases, identify opportunities to improve administrative efficiencies, and implement solutions. Produce reports and analyze data to demonstrate growth in key performance areas, particularly around fundraising and communications, and prepare findings and recommendations for executive director and Foundation leadership. Priority projects include preparing accurate data segmentation for annual fund campaigns, stewardship and other advancement-related projects. - Prospect Management and Donor Relations
Manage a donor prospect pool including research, qualification, rating, communications, personal visits, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Develops and sustains meaningful relationships with foundation directors, donors, alumni leaders, and other external stakeholders. Utilizes these relationships for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors. Management of this large portfolio of relationships inside and outside the institution utilizing significant interpersonal communication skills.
In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings. These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in a related field with one (1) or more years of related experience and up to two (2) years of supervisory experience; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.
Incumbents are required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following:
- Demonstrated knowledge of computerized and manual systems for collecting, preserving and reporting information.
- Experience in event development and execution.
- Knowledge of nonprofit communication concepts.
- Familiarity with the development of social media campaigns for nonprofits.
- Website strategy development and maintenance primarily using Word Press.
- Organizational and multitasking skills including ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to interact favorably with various communities, including external constituents, administrators, staff, faculty and students.
Candidates must possess proven ability to effectively work with culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and students. They are expected to have excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in an educational setting.
- Demonstrated experience identifying and cultivating prospects using research, active strategies, etc.
- Experience with the development and execution of direct mail campaigns, including print, e-communications and individual follow up.
- Experience producing creative communication materials independently and collaborating with hired communication vendors.
Starting Salary:
Minimum Salary; $74,604 approximate annual plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits. The salary will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications such as education and job-related experience, and internal equity.
